As many of you know, in 2008, I ran for a seat in the WV House of Delegates. Even though I earned as many voices as any first time candidate in the history of the district, my initial campaign was unsuccessful. Encouraged by many, earlier this year, I filed pre-candidacy papers for the 2010 election cycle to test the waters and consider running again. During this period, I determined that there was significant interest in new voice of leadership for SWV. And, people that know me and what I stand for, are convinced that I could represent people well.
I believe in WV and its future – and I want to be part of making that future better – not just for me and my family, but for all friends and neighbors in Southern WV. This is a great place to live – and, with the right policies – it can be even better. Yet, achieving this will require a new kind of politics – and a new kind of politician.
After running the numbers… consulting with my circle of wise political advisors… thinking and praying… and seeking the advice of the most important person, my wife Pam… I came to my decision. The filing period for the next election closed at mid-night Saturday, January 30th, and I did not file to run. Instead, I've decided to "sit this one out" and see what the next two years bring for our district for our district, state, and country.
It’s said that timing is everything. And, I now know how important timing is to being successful in the political arena. A full field of incumbents and “also-rans” in a multi-delegate district means that, politically, the time is not right to run again. I would do well – better than most and better than last time – but the chances of success are too remote right now for me to make the professional and personal sacrifices that come with this kind of commitment.
I am committed to doing what is right. And, the right thing to do is not waste my and your valuable resources, time, and money until I’m confident of success.
That time will come. Two years will pass quickly – and for now, I intend to focus on my young family and growing business. I'm committed to staying involved and visible in my community and continuing to work toward creating a healthy WV – health in every way... healthy families... communities... and businesses.
